YOUR GUIDE TO THE iPHONE

introduction:
WHAT IS THE IPHONE?

It’s hard to imagine that there was ever a time when people didn’t have cell phones. Can you imagine your life without yours?

Now, almost everyone has one and they’ve certainly come a long way. With newer models you can do more than just make calls. You can browse the internet, use it as a camera or video camera, even download and play music and send emails.

In other words, there isn’t much that the modern cell phone can’t handle especially when you consider the capabilities of the iPhone, Apple’s answer to the cell phone.

so, what is the iphone anyway?

The iPhone is a mobile device that serves as a cell phone, iPod, and can perform internet functions such as email and browsing the web. And that short description doesn’t even touch the surface about what it can do.

Apple started creating buzz about the product in January of 2007. It was finally released in June 2007 and was an instant hit. Time Magazine gave it their prestigious “Invention of the Year” award.

Features and functions of the iphone

What can’t the iPhone do? The list of features and functions is numerous. This guide will go into more detail but here’s a short list:

  • Make calls
  • Send and receive emails
  • Browse the internet
  • Use it as an iPod
  • Keep track of your appointments
  • Take pictures and videos

Even though the iPhone does a lot, it’s easy to navigate and use thanks to the combination of the touch screen and the keypad.

What this ebook will cover

The iPhone is a powerful tool. However, many people barely even skim the surface concerning what it can do. This guide will show you how to use all of the features so that you can use it to its full potential including:

  • The basics on how to use the iPhone
  • An overview of all the features and functions of the iphone as well as how to use them.

As you can see, there’s a lot that the iPhone can do. Read on to learn more about it.

1
getting to know the iphone

When you first get your iPhone, it can seem overwhelming. It has a lot of features and you may not know where to start. At this point, it is best to get to know the basics – including how to navigate it.

Even though the iPhone is essentially a cell phone, it allows you to do a lot more than simply place calls. Understanding how to find the menus you need is the first step to being able to perform the functions that you need.

Appearance of the iphone

In this section, you’ll learn about the outward appearance of the iPhone. You may want to have your user’s manual and your phone in front of you as work through this section.

Top of the iphone

  • Jack for plugging in a headset, headphones or ear buds.
  • Button that enables sleep mode and takes it out of sleep mode.
  • A Tray for a SIM card. You’ll see a small slit at the top of the phone.

Main body

  • The receiver, which is a tiny slit on the upper portion of the iPhone.
  • A camera that is located on the main body in the back of the phone.
  • A switch that is located on the upper right-hand side that disables or enables the ringer.
  • Buttons that control the volume which is located on the right side, underneath the ringer switch.
  • The touch screen, which is located on the main body and is on the main section of the phone.
  • Underneath the touch screen there is a small button that is called “home” – it brings you back to the home screen when pressed.
  • The status bar is located on the top portion of the touch screen. The application icons make up the bulk of the touch screen. When pressed, they allow you to navigate from place to place.

BOTTOM PORTION OF THE IPHONE

  • The speakers surround the microphone button – they appear on both the left and the right side.
  • The microphone, which is situated between the speakers.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the layout of the phone. Pretty soon, they’ll become second nature and you’ll be more comfortable with your iPhone.

How to Navigate and Use the Iphone

Once you know where all the controls are, the next thing you need to do is learn how to actually navigate and use the phone. As far as the usage is concerned, we’ll go into more detail concerning the specifics of the camera in later sections.

using the touch screen

The touch screen is the core of the iPhone. This is where all of the icons are that you’ll press in order to access the different features of the phone. If you need to get back to the home screen, press the button underneath the touch screen. This “home” button allows you to quickly see the main applications, which include making a call and sending e-mail.

Just tap the screen lightly in order to go from window to window. You may want to take a few minutes to touch the different application icons so you can see where they go. When you’re finished, wipe the screen off with the special polishing cloth. This will remove any dirt or grime that you had on your fingers and will keep the phone looking like new.

BASIC RULES OF NAVIGATING THE IPHONE

Pretty much everywhere you need to go can be accessed through the touch screen. You’ve probably already noticed all of the application icons located on the screen. Just tap the icon in order to access that section. If you need to place a call or send an email, you can get back to those sections quickly by pressing the “home” button.

Lists

Once you open up an application, you could end up on a screen that has multiple options, some of which you can’t see. To view all the options, just drag your finger vertically on the screen up or down to scroll. If you want to settle on one of the options, just tap it with your finger. The speed that you drag your finger while scrolling will determine how fast you go. If it starts going too fast you can either wait, or tap anywhere on the screen and it will stop.

Note that some web pages you will access will let you scroll sideways as well.

Back button

When you’re on a screen with a list of options, you will see a button on the upper left hand corner. This is called the “back” button. To go back to the previous screen, just tap it. The button will have the name of the previous screen on it so that you don’t lose your place. (There are a lot of applications on the iPhone!)

The Keyboard

The keyboard on the iPhone is actually located on the screen. You need to access the keyboard through the menus. In order to type while using it, just tap each letter you want to use. An extra plus concerning the keyboard is that you can change the settings to fit whichever language you need. English is the default if you purchase it in the United States.

Zooming in and Out

The screen on the iPhone lets you zoom in and out when viewing things like pictures and web pages. In order to zoom in, touch your index finger and thumb on the screen about an inch apart and slide together. To zoom out, just slide your fingers back out. Or you can double tap the screen with one finger to zoom in and double tap again to zoom out.

APPLICATION ICONS

The iPhone’s navigation is pretty much centered on the application icons. Each task that the iPhone can accomplish is accompanied by an application icon. Either that or the task itself is listed at some point after you click the application icon. For example, if you click on the “mail” icon you will have several choices such as sending mail, receiving mail, or reading mail that is already in your inbox.

Here is a list of all the application icons that you will find as well as what they do.

  • Phone
  • Mail
  • Safari
  • iPod
  • Text messaging
  • Calendar
  • Photos
  • Camera
  • YouTube
  • Stocks
  • Maps
  • Weather
  • Clock
  • Calculator
  • Notes
  • Settings
  • iTunes

CUSTOMIZE YOUR HOME SCREEN

As mentioned above, there is a button underneath the touch screen that will take you to your home applications. The default setting includes the application icons for placing a call and email. However, you can customize the icons that appear when you hit the home button.

All you need to do is tap on an icon that you want to move and hold it down. You can then drag and arrange the icons how you please. You can also add quick links to web pages that you visit often so that you can access your favorite pages quickly.

ACCESSORIES AND EXTRAS

The standard iPhone package comes with several accessories that are either necessary or enhance the function of the phone. There are also other accessories available for purchase, but these are not covered in the section. Only those that typically come with the package are mentioned.

  • Headset. The stereo headset that comes with the iPhone also includes a small microphone so you can use it to talk on the phone. Use these like any other headset. You can listen to music or even use it for your phone calls.
  • USB Connector. This is also called the dock connector. The USB end plugs into the computer and the other end goes into the phone. It is responsible for allowing the iPhone to communicate with your computer.
  • Dock. The iPhone also comes with a docking station. You can use the dock or plug the cables directly into the computer and/or the iPhone. The dock makes the process a little easier.
  • Adaptor. Plug one end into the phone, and the other into the wall. This allows the phone to charge up. It’s always best to unplug it while it is charging, but is not a necessity.
  • Polishing cloth. Each kit comes with a special cloth that you use to wipe the iPhone with. Just rub the cloth gently over the phone to remove any debris. The cloth is soft and lint-free and won’t scratch the phone. Some cloths, such as tissues, can actually damage the surface and leave lint behind.
  • Eject tool. This makes it easier to remove the SIM card from the phone. Use the tool to eject it. If you need a new tool, you can visit an Apple store to replace it as it is sold separately.

You now have all the basics concerning the iPhone such as the navigation, accessories, and the applications and icons that are available. More detailed advice on how to use the different applications and use the phone itself will be covered in later chapters.

2
setting up the iphone

Once you purchase your iPhone and take it home, it isn’t necessarily ready to use immediately. There are some things you’ll want to do to it to make sure it will work properly. Even though some parts of the phone are ready to use, such as the ability to place calls, others require a little bit of setting up.

By now, you should have a basic understanding of the types of things your iPhone can do. You also have a basic understanding of how to navigate and use the phone. But in order to use it to its fullest capability, you’ll need to set it up and begin using it.

purchasing your iphone

If you don’t already have an iPhone, there are some things you should keep in mind while shopping for one. The main thing is that there are several places where you can buy them. You have a few choices in terms of where to get them such as in a physical store, from an Apple store, or online.

They are fairly new on the market but you may be able to find used iPhones in the classified ads or at online auction sites as well. If you get them used keep in mind that these would probably be the earlier models. If your main concern is finding the best deal possible, however, this may be an option for you.

finding a service plan

This may change sometime in the immediate future, but currently only one service carrier (Cingular if you live in the United States) will work with the iPhone. However, they are one of the main cell phone service provider companies in the country which means that their range of service will be adequate for most environments.

Keep in mind that even though you only have one choice for a provider, there are several options in terms of the plan itself. In order to be able to fully use the iPhone that you purchase, you will definitely need to find a good plan that suits your needs and lifestyle. Your provider will enable your phone once you sign the contract for your plan.

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED

Your next step in getting the iPhone set up is that you need to have certain components in place. As it is, the iPhone itself doesn’t need anything other than the charger it comes with. However, if you want to get the most out of the functionalities of your phone, you’ll want to get your phone interacting with your computer. Here’s what you’ll need to be able to do that:

  • Your new iPhone
  • A service plan that supports the iPhone
  • Mac or PC with USB 2.0 port
  • System requirements include Mac OS X 10.4.10 or higher, Windows XP Home or Pro – Service Pack 2 or higher, Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition
  • Resolution for the display on your computer set to 1024 x 768 or better
  • iTunes  software  version 7.5 or better, especially if you choose to use the iPod feature and an account with iTunes online
  • Internet connection engaged on the computer and enabled on the iPhone itself

The amazing thing about the iPhone is the number of advanced and extra features. If you have all of the above you’ll be able to take advantage of them.

ABOUT THE SIM CARD

The SIM card is often already installed into the iPhone. However, this is not always the case. You may need to install it yourself if it isn’t already. In fact, if it isn’t already installed in the phone then that means you’ll need to purchase it separately. When you first buy your iPhone, make sure you understand if you need to buy one or not. You can usually buy the SIM card online or the place where you initially bought your iPhone.

If you need to take get your card separately, just follow the instructions that come with your SIM card.

SYNCHING THE IPHONE WITH YOUR COMPUTER

In a previous section we talked about the system requirements that your computer must have in order to have your iPhone interact with it. It is important that you have all of this sorted out before you synch your computer and your iPhone. Once you know you have a compatible system, you can work on setting everything up.

In order to access the port of your iPhone all you really need to do is plug the proper cable in. One side will attach to the iPhone, the other will attach to your USB 2.0 or higher port. After that, the synching is automatic unless you don’t have the appropriate system requirements.

For example, if you want to synch the iTunes on your computer as well as your library, all you need to do is plug in the cable and the iPhone does it automatically. You can also synch other features with your computer such as email. Depending on the function you want to synch, you may need to access the settings for it under the corresponding application on your iPhone to set things up.

Apple is known for creating highly advanced technology that is easy to use. It’s not hard to see why Time Magazine gave it their “Invention of the Year” award for 2007.

3
WHAT CAN THE IPHONE REALLY DO?

One thing that makes the iPhone so great is the long list of things you can do with it beyond making and receiving phone calls. In a previous section we talked about the applications from a general perspective. However, we’ll go into more detail in this section.

Each application has a corresponding icon that will be displayed on the touch screen. In order to access that particular application plus all of its settings, you’ll need to tap on the icon to open it.

As a review, here’s a list of all the application icons you will have:

  • Phone
This icon is what you’ll use to make calls, access your address book, listen to your voice mail, and view the most recent callers.
  • Mail
The mail icon is the one that has an envelope on it. Go here to access the capability to send, receive, and store emails. It interacts well with most email platforms systems such as Yahoo and Gmail as well as most privately hosted email accounts.
  • Safari
The Safari icon is noticeable because it depicts the face of a compass. This is Apple’s internet browser. Go here to access the World Wide Web and view various web pages.
  • iPod
Your iPhone can also serve as your iPod. Click on this icon, which depicts an iPod against an orange background, in order to access this portion of the iPhone so you can listen to music with the same quality as your iPod MP3 player.
  • Text messaging
In order to send text messages, click the green icon that says “SMS” on it. You can only send messages to people who are able to send “SMS” text messages on their phone.
  • Calendar
This icon allows you to view your iPhone’s calendar function. Your computer can interact with it so you can better keep track of your appointments.
  • Photos
The photo icon has a picture of a flower on it. This is where you click if you want to handle the pictures that are in storage on your phone. You can also set the photos up to be part of your wallpaper.
  • Camera
Tap on the camera icon in order to handle all things related to the camera. It is in this section you can take pictures, email them to people, etc.
  • YouTube
The iPhone is set up with a special section for YouTube where you can search for and view videos from the site. This icon looks like a television screen.
  • Stocks
If you have a stock portfolio and like to keep track of the progress of your stocks, you can do so from this section of the phone. The icon is a graph pictured on a blue background.
  • Maps
This icon lets you view maps of different areas and get driving directions. You can also access information such as hotels and restaurants in that area.
  • Weather
Get an up to date weather report by tapping on this icon. It is noticeable because there is a picture of a sun against a blue background.
  • Clock
The clock section of the iPhone lets you view the time as well as set the alarm. You can have multiple alarms set at once if needed.
  • Calculator
This can perform basic functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Very handy if you need to do something simple such as calculate a tip while in a restaurant.
  • Notes
This is similar to the notepad function on the computer. You can place to-do lists, reminders, grocery lists, etc on it. The icon looks like a sheet of yellow, lined note paper.
  • Settings
The settings icon is where you go to access all of the iPhone settings. You can change the background, ring tone, add a password, and more.
  • iTunes
This is where you go to access iTunes online. Search for songs, download music, etc. You can use the iPhone as an iPod so the fact that you can access iTunes makes it very convenient.

For a detailed listing of what all of these look like, your best bet is to familiarize them on your iPhone and read the manual with the iPhone as well.

Also, if you have any questions concerning a function that is listed here, and we haven’t covered it in a later chapter, your manual could have details on that function.

TEXT MESSAGING WITH THE IPHONE

Over the past few years, text messaging has become an important part of owning a cell phone. It can be quick and easy and certainly less disruptive to text a friend instead of calling them live.

If you have a tendency to send a lot of text messages, this is something to consider when finding a coverage plan for your iPhone. Some plans may charge you on a per text basis. Others may include a flat rate to send and receive unlimited text messages. If you’re not sure which plan you need, you could always get the minimum to begin with and then upgrade later if your usage warrants it.

You can send anyone a text message as long as they have a phone that is enabled with SMS. Just tap on the green and white SMS text icon. Note that if you have text messages in your inbox, you’ll see a number on the upper right side of the icon.

Tap the proper icon once you’re in the screen to draft your and then tap the Send button to send it. You can also tap the icon with the plus sign on it to add a friend’s number from your friends list.  And, you can also send a text message to multiple people at once, just as with traditional e-mail.

USING THE CALENDAR

The iPhone has a calendar function which allows you to keep track of your appointments and events. To access this section, tap on the calendar icon which presents a 9 against a white background and Thursday on the upper portion of the icon. If you can’t find it, consult your manual.

You can enter information into the calendar a few different ways. The first is that you can load it directly from your computer. In the second, you can input the information directly into the iPhone. Once the events are added, you can edit, delete, add more, etc.

In order to add the events directly from your computer you’ll need to synch it. To do this, first plug in the cable. One end will attach to the iPhone, the other to your USB port. You’ll need to set the calendar setting to “sync the calendars” automatically when you plug the cable in. If this setting is in place, your computer and iPhone will be able to communicate.

If an event is particularly important, you can set it to give off a particular sound when the event is coming due. You can choose an alarm setting, a ring tone, or one of the default sounds the iPhone comes with.

USING THE PHOTOS AND CAMERA APPLICATIONS

The iPhone not only has a camera, it has a section where you can view the photos as well. In fact, you can use the iPhone to communicate back and forth with your computer and access pictures that are on your hard drive. You can also move pictures that you had taken with the iPhone onto your computer.

In order to access the section where you can view photos, tap on the icon with a flower on it. If you want to take pictures, tap on the icon with the camera.

To update the pictures automatically from your computer, or to take them off of the iPhone, all you need to do is sync iTunes on the automatic setting. To do this you need either the software iPhoto 4.0.3 or later, Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or later, or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later.

Taking pictures is also fairly simple. Just tap on the camera icon, point the camera at the object, and tap again. The camera itself is on the back of the iPhone. You can view the picture automatically on the display.

The iPhone has multiple features with pictures including:

  • delete pictures,
  • view them at a later date,
  • zoom in and out,
  • view a slide show,
  • email pictures to people,
  • use picture as desktop wallpaper;
  • and assign a unique photo to someone who is on your address or contact list.

Your manual also has in depth information helping you to perform the above functions with ease.

USING YOUTUBE ON THE IPHONE

YouTube.com is an online community filled with people who want to share their videos with the world. The site is set up to allow people to set up a friends list, bookmark their favorite videos, rate videos, and make comments as well as view videos by category.

The iPhone is set up automatically to be able to access this site. You can access the site using the YouTube application icon which looks like a television set. The iPhone will not only let you view videos, but it will enable you to do all of the things you can do on the site. Just tap the icon to get started.

You can browse the videos using a variety of different methods. You can view the top rated videos, browse your favorites, go through your history, perform a search, and more.

Once you find a video that you want to watch, just tap directly on it. It will then download to your iPhone and immediately begin playing. There are controls for each video that will let you stop it, go back, control the volume, bookmark it, and more.

KEEPING TRACK OF THE STOCK MARKET ON THE IPHONE

If you invest in the stock market and find that you need to keep track of it throughout the day, this is a handy feature. The icon depicts a white graph against a blue background. Just tap on it to get started.

You can customize the stock reader to keep track of only the symbols that you care about. For example, if you invest in an individual stock and want to track its progress or a certain fund, you can add it to the reader.

To do this, just tap on the lower-case “i” and then the plus symbol to access the section you’ll need. From there, just search for what you need and click on it when you find it. Your stock is added.

Once you have a list of stocks and funds, you can do several things with them. You can delete them if you don’t need them any longer, choose to display certain locations, and change the order. For example, if you are more interested in tracking one stock over the other, you can change the order so that the most important one is at the top of your list.

THE BASICS OF USING MAPS

This is a handy feature for the iPhone. It isn’t quite a GPS because it doesn’t interact with a satellite and it can’t register exactly where you are but it is the next best thing. In order to access this feature tap on the application icon that depicts a portion of a map, including a sign for an interstate. If you need clarification, consult your iPhone official manual but it’s quite simple.

Here are all of the things the map application can give you access to:

  • Street maps
Choose an area and access maps for that area.

  • Satellite photos
View certain things, such as buildings and different areas, with satellite imagery.

  • Driving directions
This is especially useful if you’re lost or need to find out where you need to go.

  • Traffic information
This feature is only available in certain areas but can help you plan alternate routes.

  • Businesses
Find information on specific businesses using this function. Just click find a location in the directions section to get started.

If you need to find a location, the map application has a search function. Just type the name of the information you need such as a certain town name and you can access that information. When you tap on the section that says “search”, it will automatically bring up the keyboard so you can enter the information.

Once you access a certain map, you can actually zoom in and out and view it from different angles. In addition, you can also scroll to another portion of the map because all of it may not be accessible on the screen.

In order to get driving directions, all you need to do is tap on the portion of the menu that says “directions” and enter the relevant information. It will ask you for the start location and the end location. You may also be able to specify the exact route.

KEEPING TRACK OF THE WEATHER

The iPhone has the capability to give you summaries and updates about the weather. The weather application icon depicts a giant sun against a blue background.

All you need to do to get started is tap the icon and enter the name of the city you need the weather report for. If you find that you search for a particular city often, you can save it for easy access. You can view a six day forecast in this screen.

USING THE CLOCK

The iPhone also comes with a clock feature, which can be accessed by tapping on the icon that looks like a clock. It’s neat because not only can you tell time where you are, but you can also access the time in various time zones throughout the world. In order to access this feature, tap World Clock and follow the instructions.

Another important feature of this section is the alarm clock. The advantage to using your iPhone for your alarm, as opposed to a regular alarm clock, is that you can save multiple alarm events and have them go off at different times. To access this portion of it just tap Alarm and follow the instructions.

The Clock section also has a stop watch. Just tap on stop watch to get to that area. There’s also a timer which you can get to by tapping timer and following the instructions. There’s also a sleep timer as well.

As you can see, the iPhone has the ability to do a lot. Even if you only do the most basic things such as write emails, surf the net, make calls, and write text messages, you’re still getting a lot out of the phone.

USING THE BASIC CALCULATOR

The iPhone comes equipped with a simple calculator that can perform basic functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. To get to this section, just tap on the icon that corresponds with the calculator which has the symbols for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing on it.

After you tap the icon, just follow the instructions and make your calculations. It also has a memory function that you can use. It works similar to the regular memory function on a regular calculator. You just need to tap on the screen.

USING THE NOTES FEATURE

Similar to the notepad on your computer, the iPhone also has a notes function. The difference is, you can not only read and write the notes but also read them. Just tap on the icon that depicts a sheet of yellow, lined notebook paper to get started. Once you get into the screen, you can click on the Plus button for more options.

THE SETTINGS ON THE IPHONE

When you first purchase your iPhone, choose a plan, and activate it, it’s ready to use as long as you are happy with the default settings. However, the phone comes equipped with different settings and modes that will help you get more out of your iPhone.

What follows is more information concerning the iPhone. Just tap on the Settings application icon to get started.

Airplane Mode

The iPhone has what’s known as an airplane mode. When flying on an airplane, airlines do not allow you to have any of the wireless features enabled on your wireless devices. Since it’s a phone and then some, the iPhone can work without the wireless if you want to do something like use the calculator, write notes, or take pictures.

To do this, just tap the settings icon. From there, you can turn the mode on. You’ll be able to tell if you were successful in turning it on because you’ll see an airplane icon on your phone. That way, you can still do any of the non-wireless related functions that your phone is capable of.

Enabling WiFi

Yes, you can set your iPhone up to access the internet through your cell plan. However, it is also capable of using external WiFi networks that you can encounter in places such as airports, coffee shops, and even someone’s house. Wherever there is a wireless network, you can have your iPhone access the internet that way.

From the settings icon, just select “Turn WiFi On” and follow the instructions. You can then join an existing WiFi network. You can also set the phone up to join a network automatically, ignore certain networks, or join a password protected network as well.

Miscellaneous Settings

  • Monitor Stats
There are also some settings that are important to the iPhone. If you are on a plan where you need to closely monitor your statistics, for example, you can do so from the “Usage” option in the Settings section.

  • Change Ring Tones
You can also change the ring tone and sounds settings by choosing the “ringtones” option and the “sounds” option. You can also make volume adjustments as needed.

  • Brightness Level
If you want to change the screen’s level of brightness, just select “brightness” from the settings. Once you tap your finger on “Screen Brightness” all you need to do is use your finger to drag on the slider and adjust it. You can also set the iPhone to adjust the screen brightness automatically.

  • Set the Wallpaper
You can also change the wallpaper on your iPhone. There are some default pictures that you can use, or you can add your own picture. Just tap on “select wallpaper” and follow the instructions.

  • Bluetooth
The iPhone also supports blue tooth technology. In order to do access the portion of the iPhone where you can turn blue tooth on or off, just select “General” and then “Network” and follow the instructions.

EXTREMELY VERSATILE TECHNOLOGY

As you can see, the iPhone is extremely versatile. In addition to the basic functions most cell phones can do nowadays, such as text messaging, the ability to make phone calls, and email, the iPhone can do a lot more than that.

In the following chapters, we’ll talk about other functions of the iPhone in much greater detail.

HOW TO USE THE PHONE ON THE IPHONE

Even though the iPhone has a lot of different features, the most important one is probably the ability to make and receive calls. This is, after all, why the device exists in the first place. In fact, this is likely the first thing you’ll want to learn how to do on the iPhone.

THE APPLICATION ICON

The application icon for the phone function of the iPhone is fairly straightforward. It depicts a white phone against a green background. When you see this icon, just tap on it once to be directed to the portion of the phone where you can make calls.

You can arrive at the icon in two different places. The first is from the main touch screen where all of the application icons are located. The second is from the home screen, which you get to by tapping the square button underneath the main portion of the phone.

For more detail, please see your manual.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ONCE YOU’RE IN THE PHONE PORTION?

Once you access the phone portion of the iPhone, there are a few things you can do:

  • Make calls

  • Answer calls

  • Check voicemail

  • Add new contacts to your address book

MAKING CALLS ON THE IPHONE

If you want to make a call, you can do so in a number of ways. First, you’ll need to check the status bar to see what kind of signal you have. Once you confirm you have enough of a signal, you can make the call.

  • From your contacts
You can make a call from your contact list. Just tap on the name or number of the person you want to call. Tap “Contacts” to get started and then tap on the number you want.

  • Favorites
You can also add people to your favorites list. These are usually people that you call often. Just tap “Favorites” and then tap on the number you want.

  • Keypad
Dial the number from scratch using the key pad. Not every person you’ll want to call will be in the contact list. Tap “Keypad” to get started dialing.

  • Recent calls
You can access your “recent calls” list and tap on the number that shows up in order to call that person back. For example, if the phone rang but you missed the call, you can call them back using this method. You can access this by tapping “Recents”.

WHEN THE CALL IS IN PROGRESS

Once you make a phone call, a special screen will show up that will give you different options for things you may need to take care of while you’re on the call. A window will pop up that has six different icons. Each of these icons serves a specific purpose.

Here’s more detail.

  • Mute
If you need to mute your voice, such as if you’re on a conference call just tap the “mute” option once. If you need the caller to be able to hear you, tap it again and it turns your voice back on.

  • Keypad
This is where you go if you need to input different information. For example, if you need to make a note of something while on the phone, you can do so here. This is basically where you go if you need to make notes from the call.

  • Speaker
If you need to use the speak phone function while making a phone call, just tap the “speaker” icon. Tap it again if you want to remove the speaker option.

  • Add call
This is where you go if you need to set up a conference call. Just tap the icon once and follow the instructions.

  • Hold
Put a caller on hold by tapping here. Both sides of the call are muted. When you want to resume the call, tap “hold” again.

  • Contacts
Tap this icon to access your contacts list while on a phone call.

You can also access the various applications while on the phone. All you need to do is press the “Home” button to access them. If you need to end a call, just tap the “End Call” option.

HOW TO ANSWER A CALL

Answering a call on the iPhone is fairly straightforward. Keep in mind that there is a default ring tone. If you want to customize it, you can access that through the settings icon. You can add one of the ring tones that are already added to the iPhone. Or you can download your own from the internet. Some people enjoy putting their favorite songs as their ring tone.

There are two ways you can answer a call. When the phone rings, there will be an option that says “Answer Call”. Tap on that and then start talking. The second occurs if you are wearing the headset the iPhone typically comes with. If you click the button that is on the mic, it will answer automatically.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE PHONE FEATURE ON THE IPHONE

Although this is not all the iPhone can do, making calls and answering calls is definitely a big part of it. If you have a tendency to make a lot of calls, you’ll want to get a cell phone plan that will help you do those things in the most cost efficient way possible.

If you aren’t sure how much you’ll need, you can always start with one program that has a more limited number of minutes and then upgrade when the time comes.

HOW TO EMAIL USING THE IPHONE

These days, email has become more and more important. For some, it is easier and a lot quicker to correspond with people using email, both in a business environment and to keep track of your personal connections. And with our hectic lives, it is becoming more and more necessary that our cell phones come equipped with the ability to send and receive emails.

This is one of the main features on the iPhone. The interface is easy to use so that you can send emails quickly and efficiently. You are able to store email addresses as part of the contact information in your address book so sending emails is even easier.

THE EMAIL APPLICATION ICON

To get started sending an email, all you need to do is tap the email application icon once and let it open up the main area for the emails. The icon depicts a white envelope against a blue background. If you need help with what it looks like, consult the manual that came with the iPhone.

You can access the application icon from two different screens.  The first way is to arrive at it from the main screen with all of the application icons. You can also do so from the home screen. Keep in mind that you can also customize the home screen with the things you need. However, the mail icon is one of the default settings.

CONFIGURE YOUR EMAIL

In order to check your email on the iPhone, you’ll need to configure the settings. The iPhone can support email from Gmail, Yahoo, privately hosted email that is set on your own domain, MSN, and several other email options. If you need more information about whether or not your email is compatible, you can check with the manual.

To configure it, tap on the “Email” application icon to get started. Keep in mind that your iPhone can sync with your email program on your computer.

If you select the option that lets the email sync automatically, it will do so once you plug in the cable. It runs with most email programs, including Outlook, but you’ll need to check the manual to make sure you have a compatible program. If not, you can always install something that is compatible. If you’ve selected the automatic setting, this will also sync your email account so you don’t need to manually enter in the settings.

If you haven’t chosen to sync automatically, you’ll need to enter the settings manually. If you’re unsure of which information to add to your iPhone, you’ll have to check with your email provider. They should provide you with the correct information.

To access the portion of the phone where you add this information, tap the “Settings” application icon, select “Mail”, “Accounts”, and then “Add Accounts”. You can add more than one. Ultimately you’ll need to add your email address, server type, host name for incoming server, host for your outgoing server, your username, and your password.

HOW TO SEND EMAIL

Once you have everything all set up, your next step is to learn how to send the emails. Keep in mind that you can also send photos and attachments when you are sending email. This is a handy feature because you may want to share pictures with your friends and family.

In order to write an email, tap on the email application icon. Tap again on the button that depicts a square with a line through it (check your manual for a picture of it). You can bring up your contact list as well and tap on one or more names that you want to send the email to. Write your email by tapping on the letters on the keyboard and hit the “Send” icon when you’re done.

You can also reply to a message that you received by pressing on the icon that depicts an arrow that is pointing to the left. Once you do that, it will automatically bring up a screen that has the email address of the person already written in, as well as the original message. Write your message and hit the “Send” icon when you’re done.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL

When you are in the screen where you can view your application icon, there may be a number in the upper right corner of the mail icon. That means that you have messages. If there is a 4 listed, for example, that means that you have four unread mail messages.

To check your mail, tap on the mail application icon. When you get to the account screen, tap on the inbox. If you want to read an individual message, just click on the blue dot.

You can also receive attachments such as pictures, delete messages, and basically do anything in the email account that you can on your computer. As you can see, the iPhone makes it pretty easy to send and receive emails. And since it can sync with your computer, the emails you want to save can be stored in your email program.

6
USING THE IPHONE FOR INTERNET

The ability to surf the World Wide Web is a strong selling point on the iPhone. A lot of other cell phones and cell services only allow browsing on the web to a certain degree. This isn’t the case with the iPhone. You are able to browse the World Wide Web in its entirety. Websites don’t need to be formatted a certain way – you can browse the internet as is.

THE SAFARI APPLICATION ICON

The Apple web browser is called Safari and this is what the iPhone uses. In order to get started browsing the internet, you’ll need to tap on the Safari application icon. You can access it from the application icon page on the main screen. It looks like a compass with a blue background.

BROWSING WEB PAGES

Once you tap the icon, you’ll be able to browse the internet by visiting different pages. What’s nice is that the pages can be viewed in their entirety.

Zooming in and Out

Even though the page can be viewed with all the information intact, not all of it can fit on the screen because it is too small. All you need to do is double tap on the page itself to zoom in and double tap again to zoom out. It’s pretty straightforward to view the information on the page.

Opening a Web Page

This is a straightforward process. There should be an address bar at the top of the page. When you want to change the address, tap on it. A keyboard will pop up which will allow you to type the address. Once you type it in, tap the “Go” and the page will load.

Dealing with Links on the iPhone

Think about how you normally browse the internet. Most people will visit a web page or two, click a few links, and jump from place to place to find the information they need. The idea of linking is especially important and the iPhone makes it especially easy.

You can browse the internet like normal when viewing pages on the iPhone. If you see a link on a web page that you want to visit, all you need to do is tap on it. Once you do, the new page will load up. You’ll be able to tell when there is a link to tap on because it will be underlined.

SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET

The Safari function on the iPhone can be used just like you use it on the computer. Yes, you can type in the name of a web page that you want to visit. But a big part of the internet experience is the ability to search for the information you need. You can do that on the iPhone, as well.

Safari’s default web search engine is Google. All you need to do is tap the appropriate icon to bring up the Google search page. You do not need to use Google as the default. You can set the default search for Yahoo or any other search engine that you prefer.

CAN YOU OPEN MORE THAN ONE WEB PAGE?

You can bring up more than one web page on the iPhone. This is something that you can definitely do on your home computer so it makes sense that the iPhone will also have this capability.

It is important to keep in mind that if the HTML for a particular link is set for the page to open in a new browser, Safari will do so automatically on the iPhone. You can keep track of how many pages you have up by looking at the status bar.

SETTING UP YOUR BOOKMARKS

If there are pages that you visit a lot, you can set them up on your bookmarks. When you open up a page that you decide you want to bookmark, all you need to do is tap the + symbol which will add it automatically.

When you want to open up a page that you have bookmarked, all you need to do is look at the list of websites you have on there and tap the appropriate icon to open them up. In order to view the icon you need, just look in the manual.

YOUR HOME PAGE

You can also place the pages that you visit often in your home page. For example, if you want to access the Google search page quickly, you can set it up to appear when you hit the “Home” button which is underneath the main screen. You’ll need to change the home page settings in order to do this.

Changing your home page in this way helps you turn your iPhone into something that is unique and individual because you set it up to suit your needs.

SYNCING WITH YOUR COMPUTER

You can also sync Safari on your iPhone with Safari on your computer. You’ll want to do this for a variety of reasons. One of them is that if you have a lot of bookmarks, you’ll likely want them to match. You can also sync Safari on the iPhone with Internet Explorer. Just plug in the cables and make sure it is set up to sync automatically.

PLAYING MUSIC WITH THE IPHONE – USING THE IPOD

One of the neat things about the iPhone is that it is essentially a web browser, phone, and iPod all in one. In fact, the iPod on the iPhone can allow you to do more than just listen to music. You can listen to audio books, watch videos, and even watch Podcasts.

If you think about how important the iPod has been to the music industry, it is really amazing. More and more people own an iPod each day. You see people in public places all the time, listening to music or watching videos on their devices. It is a wonderful thing that you can now do all of this on your cell phone.

THE IPOD APPLICATION ICON

In order to get started using the iPod section of the iPhone, you first need to tap on the iPod application icon. It depicts a white iPod with an orange background. If you need help learning what the icon looks like, you can find it in your iPhone manual. Once you tap on the icon, you will be directed to the area where you can access your songs, books, podcasts, and videos.

YOUR ITUNES ACCOUNT

You can use the internet on your iPhone to connect to your iTunes account. If you don’t already have an iTunes account you may want to get one. That way, when you feel you want to download music, videos, and Podcasts, you can do so directly from your account.

If you set up the account and the iPhone to sync automatically with each other, your iTunes library on your iPhone will be updated each time you log in. In the case where you don’t have enough room on the iPhone for your library, you’ll get a message asking you if you want to create a special folder that will allow you to store them and play them when you want.

PLAYING MUSIC AND VIDEOS ON THE IPHONE

Once you have all the music you want to listen to loaded into your iPod, whether by syncing or interacting directly with iTunes or your computer, then you can start to play it. Keep in mind that if you have a vast library of songs on your computer, you can load these into the iPod directly – you don’t always need to interact with iTunes.

If you look at the display of the iPod, it’s pretty neat. It will load the album covers related to the songs and artists that you have. All you need to do is tap directly on the album cover and then on the song to play what you want. This mode is referred to as Cover Flow.

You can also browse the items in your library using a variety of different methods. Your choices include browsing them by:

  • Songs
  • Albums
  • Artists
  • Videos
  • Podcasts
  • Audiobooks
  • Compilations
  • Composers
  • Genre

If you want to browse through a certain category, tap on it. To play a song, you just tap again to make your selection. Use the headset that the iPhone comes with, or you can buy a different one.

Keep in mind that if you want to view certain videos, you may need to convert them so they can be compatible with the interface in the iPhone. In order to do this all you need to do is select the “video” option in iTunes and select “Convert Selection for iPod”.

There is a limited amount of memory on your iPhone. However, it does store a lot. This certainly makes it easier for you because now instead of carrying multiple electronic devices around with you, all you need is one. You can get around storage problems by using your iTunes account to its fullest capacity.

8
MAINTAINANCE AND SUPPORT

It goes without saying that you’ll want your iPhone to last as long as possible. To do this, you’ll need to learn how to take care of it. There are several things you can do that will help extend the life of the iPhone. And beyond that, sometimes things just go wrong and you may need a repair or a replacement.

And, there also may be times when you need a little technical support. This ebook is fairly comprehensive, as is the manual. However, you may need a little extra help at times. In order to get this help, you can start by going online. You can start by visiting the website at www.apple.com/iphone for the latest news, to get the contact information, and to find a copy of the latest user’s manual. That is a good place to start.

However, here are some more tips:

Keep it Damage Free

This may seem like common sense, but if you want your iPhone to last, don’t drop it. If you find that you are accident prone, you may want to purchase a special hard storage case for it. This will protect it when it is dropped and also help prevent it from scratching when you are storing it somewhere, such as in a purse or briefcase.

You can purchase these cases anywhere that iPhones are sold. Or, you can buy them online. There are cases that are specifically made for the iPhone. The other option is that you can either make one yourself or improvise with something that you have around the house.

Keep it Clean

Another tip to making sure your iPhone lasts is to keep it clean. There is a reason why the iPhone comes with a special cloth. This cloth is designed to bee lint free and will not scratch the surface. If you try to use other cloths such as tissues or even cotton, it may leave debris behind and also cause scratches.

Use the cloth to wipe down the iPhone, especially the touch screen, after each use. This is because the oil and dirt that are on your fingers may eventually have a wear and tear effect on it. Either that or it will simply look dirty and because you’ve made such an investment in your iPhone, you want to keep it looking slick for as long as possible!

Getting Help

Most of your questions not covered by this e-book can likely be covered either in the manual or online. However, you may have some questions that you cannot find the answers to. If this is the case, you have a few options.

You can either visit an online forum related to the Apple iPhone online or you can go to the place where you purchased it and see if they can help you. Also, feel free to call Apple’s tech support directly. You can find their most recent number on the website.

You may want to call the main Apple support number if you can’t figure out where to call. They’ll be able to direct you to the right place.

CONCLUSION

As you can see, the iPhone is a very powerful and compact device that can do a lot. Time Magazine awarded it with the 2007 Award for Invention of the Year for good reason.  It is certainly easy to see why and here’s a summary of what you can do with it:

  • Make calls
  • Receive calls
  • Browse the internet in its entirety using Apple’s Safari browser
  • Send and receive e mails
  • Use it as an iPod for music, Audibooks, and videos
  • View maps
  • Check weather
  • Take notes
  • Use YouTube

And much more.

The iPhone can be described as a combination cell phone and mini computer. You can customize many of the settings so that you can make it match your needs and your personality. Familiarizing yourself with all the features and functions of the phone can help you maximize the potential of this device.

Over time, the iPhone will get even better and more powerful. If you like to make phone calls, text for business or pleasure, surf the net on the go and listen to music, this award winning device is definitely something that is worth investing in.
